A common misconception is that acne only effects teenagers. But more them ever before , adults are suffering with oily and acneic skin conditions. The symptoms are inflamed pustules with fewer comedones than teenage acne and with lesions predominantly located around the mouth, chin and jaw line. Adults often have sensitised skin or a combination of skin conditions, which makes treatment more challenging than the treatment of teens who generally have a more resilient uniform oily skin condition.
The primary catalyst of adult acne is chronic stress. While stress creates the trigger there are four main factors that contribute to the development of acne.
Overactive Sebaceous Glands
This is the production of too much oil and is is the catalyst for a series of events that result in acne breakouts in all forms of acne.
Cell accumulation and Bacteria
The combination of dead surface skin cells and excess sebum causing them to stick together at the neck of a hair follicle, along with bacteria leads to the formation of an impaction plug. This provides the environment for bacteria to thrive.
Inflammation
Inflamed lesions may also result if the blocked follicle wall ruptures causing a papule. If the break is near the surface then a pustule results. If it is deeper a nodule forms. In some cases, a membrane entraps the infection and a cyst develops.
The Dermalogica Medibac Clearing™ system works to treat, clear and prevent adult acne while addressing the needs of adult skin. It controls acne without compromising the skins integrity, which means the skin is constantly clear and healthy. Each product is designed to to be layered upon the skin to provide round the clock, maximum control of the four main factors that contribute to acne.
